Study of External Features of Animals

Materials Required

  • Representative animals in (permanent slides, museum specimens, models, photographs, charts)
  • Microscope. 


The Procedure

 Real Lab Procedure

  • The method of observing specimens of different taxa varies from microscopic examination to gross morphological features seen with naked eye. 
  • For identification of some microscopic specimens, place the slide of the specimen on the stage of a compound microscope. Adjust the focus using the adjustment screws of the microscope in such a way that the entire specimen is clearly visible in the focus.  
  • For identification of animals visible with the naked eye, specimens preserved in 5-10% formalin are used. 
  • Draw labelled diagrams of the specimens seen. 

Simulator Procedure 

  • Introduction note will be shown in the screen. 
  • Click on the Play button in the panel. 
  • Read the external features shown in the screen. 
  • Drag the relevant image given in the controls and drop it in the box. 
  • If the image is correct, the Next button is enabled. 
  • Click on the Next button. 
  • Now the new page shows the image and its systematic position. 
  • Click on the Next button.  
  • From the next screen onwards again the external features and images of the animals will be shown randomly. 



In all the phylum, class, and order there are different external features in each animal. In every animal, the external features are unique in their nature. Thus, we can observe different external features.
