Amrita Online Labs (OLabs) for Science Lab Experiments was showcased at the 103rd session of the Indian Science Congress (ISC) Mega Expo " Pride of India- Frontier Science and Technologies " held at University of Mysore, Mysuru on 3rd to 7th January, 2016. Thousands of national and international delegates including Nobel laureates, eminent scientists, industry leaders, policy makers, innovators and academicians converged at Mysuru. The focal theme for the 103rd session of the Indian Science Congress was " Science and Technology for Indigenous Development in India ".
The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, delivered the inaugural address at the 103rd Indian Science Congress at the University of Mysore. Delivering the inaugural address, Mr. Modi stressed the importance of emphasizing scientific tools so that the country can craft sustainable solutions for modern-day challenges. He urged the scientists and innovators to realize our goals of human welfare and economic development.

The Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, unveiled the Indian Science Congress Mega Expo “Pride of India-Frontier Science & Technologies” on the inaugural day and this was the major attraction during the five day event. The expo was perhaps the most visited exhibition in the recent times at Mysuru
Spread over an area of approx 15,000 sqm, the expo witnessed participation from over 150 organizations from various sectors like R&D Institutes, Academic Institutes, Universities, Innovators, Defence Organizations, Ministries, Government Departments, State Governments, PSU’s, Corporate etc.
The Amrita CREATE exhibit showcased research projects designed and developed by Amrita CREATE, including Intelligent Tutoring and Adaptive Assessment, Online Labs for School Lab Experiments, computer based medical simulation, e-literacy and health awareness for tribals and Rural India Tablet Education. The projects were demonstrated using different tablets and touchable screens to explain the cross platform compatibility of the projects.
The stall was installed and managed by Rathnam Chenthamarakshan, Anoop Muralidharan, Suresh D, Aswathy K S from Amrita CREATE. The team explained Amrita CREATE and its different research initiatives, as well as its significance in offering new possibilities of transforming concepts of present day education system.
For example, an experiment in Online Labs in animation and simulation modes was displayed on each screen for the visitors to test and explore the touch based technology themselves. The visitors at the stall included government officials, scientists, principals, teachers, secondary and higher secondary students and college students.
An Amrita Online Labs training programme was also conducted along with this event from 2 P.M. to 4 P.M. on January 4-6. Over 500 principals, teachers and students who attended the training programme enrolled in Online Labs.

A workshop for the Amrita Online Labs was held at Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru as part of the Annual Science Fest, Aarohan’15, on 5th and 6th November 2015. The programme which was organized to foster a bond between an institution of higher education and schools, witnessed the participation from 25 schools and PU (Pre-university) colleges with a total of 823 students on the first day and 580 students on the second day, respectively.
The workshop on Amrita Online Labs was held on the first day. Thirty eight teachers from different schools across Bangalore participated in the workshop. The workshop was divided into two sessions, first one for the students and second one for the teachers.
The first session started with a brief introduction about Online Labs given by Suresh D, Amrita CREATE team member. He explained experiments such as 'Force required to move a wooden block' and 'Bell Jar Experiment'. The students participating were captivated by the fascinating world of Online Labs. In the second session, Rathnam, Project Coordinator, Amrita Online Labs, explained the benefits and advantages of including Online Labs in the present day science curriculum.
The whole program greatly interested the participants, evoked their curiosity and made them aware of the benefits of incorporating this educational tool in mainstream education. The response received from the participants after the workshop resounded with enthusiasm and appreciation for Online Labs.

A workshop for Amrita Online Labs was held at Bhavan Vidyalya, Panchakula, Haryana as part of CBSE Regional Level Science Exhibition, on 17th to 19th December 2015. The programme was organized to provide a common platform for schools, teachers and students to shape their innovative ideas from interactive, participatory, hands-on, innovative and creative learning experiences. The exhibition also provided a medium for popularizing science and increasing awareness about the close relationship between society, science and technology.
The opening ceremony on 17th December 2015, started with the lamp lighting by the Hon’ble Chief Guest, Shri. R.J. Khanderao, Regional Officer, CBSE, Panchkula and was presided over by Sri. Amarjeet Goyal, Vice-Chairman, Managing Comittee.
The workshop on Amrita Online Labs was held on this event. Two hundred and twenty teachers from 100 schools located in Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab participated in the workshop. The workshop was divided into two sessions.
The morning session was managed by Rathnam Chenthamarakshan, Project Coordinator, Amrita Online Labs. She also explained the significance of this virtual platform in the existing school’s science curriculum. The evening demo session was handled by Suresh D from Amrita CREATE.
The teachers curiously watched the demo session and afterwards, they cleared their doubts on Online Labs. They were very much excited about animations and simulation part of the Online Labs. Several school teachers who attended the workshop requested the team to conduct a training programme in Shimla region. After the session, the CREATE team distributed CDs of Online Labs to the participating teachers.
" Online Labs by Amrita CREATE is a very useful application for students of science and mathematics of classes 9th to 12th. An Amrita Online Labs training programme started in Odisha at M.B.S Public School, Bhubaneswar, on 27 November, 2015. Fourteen science teachers participated in the training programme held at the computer lab of the school. Rathnam Chenthamarakshan, Suresh D, SIndhu B represented Amrita CREATE.
Rathnam Chenthamarakshan, the project co-ordinator gave a brief introduction of Online Labs. She explained the ways by which Online Labs can be used to enhance the students’ understanding, performance and development in their subject areas. Suresh D, Amrita CREATE team member demonstrated one experiment from each subject, which was followed by a hands-on session where the teachers of the school had the opportunity to explore the online system themselves.
The teachers were keenly interested in exploring the animations, simulations and real videos on the website. After the hands-on session, feedback was sought from the participants for the improvement of lab content.
On the same day, OLabs team members visited the Govt. Girls’ High School, Bhubaneswar. During the visit, the teachers and the school authorities were highly interested in the Online Labs project and stated their interest in helping our development team in translating the contents to Odia language. The team provided the CDs of Online Labs to the school authorities.

On the same day, the team visited Mother’s Public School and Govt. Girls’ School, Janla. Online Labs in CD format were provided for both the schools. The schools were welcoming and appreciative of the Online Labs.
On 29 November, 2015, a small demo session was held at Amrita Vidyalayam, Odisha. The session was attended by the Principal, science teachers (chemistry, biology, physics and mathematics), English teacher and computer teacher of the school.
The training programme was divided into two sessions, the first one for the teachers and second one for the students. After the first session, Amrita Vidyalayam teachers gave valuable suggestions which will help to improve the performance of the virtual lab. In the next session for students, Rutika Chiplunkar, one of the science teachers of the school, conducted the Online Labs demo for the students.

The Center of Research in Advanced Technologies for Education (Amrita CREATE) conducted a workshop of Online labs for teachers of Class 9 to 12th on 26 November 2015 at The Hotel Presidency, Bhubaneswar.
With the goal of training 30,000 teachers, Amrita CREATE is expanding the training of school teachers in educational technology and STEM skills to other Indian states. Online Labs (www.olabs.edu.in) is based on the idea that lab experiments can be taught using the Internet. Seventy-four teachers from over 50 schools participated in the workshop.
Shri. M.S Padhi, IAS, Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Food Supply and Consumer Welfare Department inaugurated the workshop. Smt. Mona Patnaik, principal of Amrita Vidyalayam, Orissa delivered the welcome speech. Shri. M S Padhi suggested having the scope of Odia language into the system so that it can be introduced to the board of secondary education Odisha and HSE Odisha.
The workshop started with a demonstration of a real lab experiment which was followed by the demonstration of a virtual experiment showcased in OLabs by Suresh D, Amrita CREATE team member. Later on, in the presentation session, Rathnam Arun, Online Labs Project Coordinator gave a brief introduction to Online Labs and explained some other experiments to the participants. After the demo session, the teachers were really excited to initiate the use of this new educational tool in the school.

An OLabs workshop was conducted at Mangalam College of Engineering, Ettumanoor, Kottayam as a part of WAMPS 2015, a national workshop on Applied Mathematics and Physical Science, on 22 May 2015 for teachers and B.E.D students. More than 60 participants attended the event. Ms. Silpa Sivan gave a brief introduction of Online Labs. Dr. Sreeletha, Mr. Saneesh P.F and Mr. Akhil Sivan explained benefit of Olabs. Dr. Sreekala C.O explained how to effectively blend OLabs into the curriculum. This was followed by a hands-on session and an interactive section.
After the hands-on session, feedback was sought from the participants for the improvement of the lab content. The response received from the participants resounded with appreciation and enthusiasm for Online Labs.

Amrita Online Labs training programme started in Bangalore at Amrita Vidyalayam, Bangalore on 24 February 2015. Fifteen science teachers participated in the training programme.

On the same day, OLabs team members visited other nearby schools of Amrita Vidyalayam, Bangalore. During the school visit, the team provided a clear vision of the benefits and importance of incorporating this new technological tool into the mainstream education. The team also explained the ways by which Online Labs can be used to enhance the students’ understanding, performance and development in their subject areas. The schools that the team approached were welcoming and appreciative of the Online Labs.
On 25 February 2015, a small demo session was held at J.S.S Public School, Bangalore. The session was attended by the Vice-Principal, science teachers (chemistry, biology, physics and mathematics), English teacher and computer teacher of the school.

After the demo sessions, the teachers gave valuable suggestions which will help to improve the performance of the virtual lab. The Vice-Principal of the school advised to include text book content also into the website. The mathematics teacher of the school urged to quickly update the animation and simulation in the Math section.

On the same day, the OLabs team also conducted a demo session on a Government school. Seven teachers and thirty students attended the demo session. As the school does not have a proper science lab and lab equipment, the teachers by demo session. The students were eagerly observed the animation and videos displayed on the Online Labs.

The school authorities requested for Online Labs cd, as the school doesn’t have an internet connection. After the demo session, the teachers asked questions such as how to perform experiments using simulator and what are the system requirements for running Online Labs simulator.

A workshop for the Amrita Online Labs project (OLabs) was held at PGM Boys and Girls’ High School, Pandalam, Kerala on the 6th February 2015. Thirty-nine Science teachers from the school participated and had a unique opportunity to experience the virtual labs through a demonstration organized by Amrita CREATE.
Amrita Online Labs, which was developed with the aim of bridging the gap between well- equipped urban schools and remote and deprived rural schools in India, are offered free of charge and have been recommended for use at all CBSE schools in India. Many rural schools in India do not have a science laboratory due to the lack of experimental materials and chemicals. Even in the case of urban schools, large class sizes preclude most of the students from doing the lab themselves or even seeing it properly demonstrated. In such circumstances, Online Labs allows students to repeat the experiment, as many times as they wish and includes simulators, animations and videos of the experiment for a better understanding.
The workshop started with a demonstration of real lab experiment by a PGM High School teacher which was followed by the demonstration of a virtual experiment showcased in OLabs by Rathnam Arun, Amrita CREATE team member. Later on, in the presentation session, Rathnam Arun gave a brief introduction to Online Labs and explained some other experiments to the participants. After the demo session, the teachers and the school officials were very excited to initiate the use of this new educational tool in the school’s science curriculum.
“Most of the rural schools in India do not have a good science lab as they cannot afford lab equipment and resources. For them, it is a good remedy as it helps to overcome the issue of having low lab facilities,” remarked by P. Anitha, one of the participants from PGM Girls’ High School.
A tablet session was also done by Rathnam Arun, Geethu S and Aswathy K.S of Amrita CREATE for the 1st and 2nd standard students of the school. The children were really excited to learn how to use tablets.

Amrita CREATE launched Amrita Online Labs Teachers Training programme at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetam, Ettimadai Campus on 24 January 2015. OLabs, online virtual science labs for class 9 to 12, allows students to repeat the experiment as many times as they wish and includes simulators, videos and animations, as well as theory and quiz. Online Labs have been recommended for use at all CBSE schools in India and are offered free of cost.
The program was inaugurated by Smt. Gnana Gowri, Chief Education Officer, Government of Tamil Nadu. The presidential address at the event was delivered by Smt. V. Sundari, Academic Director, Amrita Vidyalams, Tamil Nadu. Fifty-four science teachers from nearby schools of Coimbatore participated in the training programme. Rathnam Arun and Parvathy G.D represented Amrita CREATE at the event.

They were curious to know the practical side of running the experiments and cleared their doubts on how to perform the experiments virtually to the CREATE team members.

OLabs, online virtual science labs for 9th-12th standards were launched in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands schools through a function and workshop held in Port Blair on November 22, 2014. The workshop was attended by 63 teachers from 45 schools who learned how to use the labs through a demonstration by Rathnam Arun of AmritaCreate. OLabs are offered free of charge and have been recommended for use at all CBSE schools in India.
The arrival of OLabs created a lot of excitement as they can really help bridge the gap between well equipped urban schools and smaller, poorer rural schools. Many local schools, some of them quite remote, do not have a science lab and/or cannot afford experimental materials and chemicals. Furthermore, large class sizes preclude most of the students from doing the lab themselves or even seeing it properly demonstrated. OLabs allows students to repeat the experiment as many times as they wish and includes simulators, videos and animations, as well as theory and quiz. Local school officials jumped at the chance to include OLabs in their science curriculum.
The program was inaugurated by Andaman Education Secretary cum Director Mr. Devendra Sing Nijjar IAS. The Deputy Director of Education, Mrs. Suman Devi, as well as Science Coordinator, Mr. Jayaram were present. Vinayarmita Chaitanya presided over the event. Dr Vishunu Vardan (Medical Officer-Amrita Health Centre, Port Blair) and Mrs. Suman, gave the Felicitation. The event was highly profiled in the media as All India radio, Dhooradharshan channel and four local newspapers covered the launch. The participating schools were all given OLabs cds, as they lack connectivity. The cds will be updated periodically as more labs are added and will be made available through the Amrita Charitable Hospital located in Port Blair. OLabs can be accessed through olabs.co.in
Amrita CREATE conducted a training programme for secondary science teachers on the significance of Online Labs at DAV Public School, Chandrasekharpur, Bhubaneswar on 21 January 2013. 17 science teachers from the nearby schools of Bhubaneswar attended the programme. Prof Raghu Raman, Rathnam Arun and K.S. Sudheer represented CREATE at the event.
The programme started with a brief introduction of Online Labs given by Prof. Raghu Raman. He demonstrated Online Labs experiments such as ‘Determination of Boiling Point of Water’ and ‘Bell Jar Experiment’ to the audience. This was followed by a hands- on session where participants had the opportunity to test and explore the system themselves on both desktop and tablet. Each participant had accessed and explored the system for oneself on both desktop and tablet.
The participants seemed to have a keen interest in exploring the Olabs website. CREATE team members were present to explain the practical side of running experiments or to answer the queries of participants regarding Online Labs.
After the hands on workshop, feedback was sought from the participants for the improvement of the lab content. The response received from the participants resounded with enthusiasm and appreciation for Online Labs.

Each Participant’s attendance was acknowledged by issuing a certificate of participation. The certificate was handed out at the public programme conducted at Janata Maidan, Bhubaneswar by a state government dignitary in the presence of Amma.
A hands-on workshop for the Online Labs project was held at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetam, Mysore Campus on the 12th December 2012. The workshop was part of a two-day national conference on ‘Universalisation of Secondary Education: Prospects and Challenges‘that was held at the same campus on 11th & 12th December 2012. Around 100 delegates, mainly teachers, academicians, administrators, research scholars, undergraduate and postgraduate students from several institutions across Mysore District participated in the workshop.
In the demo session, CREATE team members, Rathnam and Sangeetha gave a brief introduction to Online Labs and explained some of the experiments such as ‘Bell Jar Experiment’ and ‘Chemical Reactions’ to the participants. This was followed by a hands-on session where participants had the opportunity to test and explore the system themselves.
The participants who attended the workshop were able to access the content of Online Labs and explore the experiments on their own. The whole program grasped the interests of the participants, evoked their curiosity and made them aware of the benefits of incorporating this educational tool in mainstream education.
At the end of the workshop, participants filled out a brief survey online that captured their feedback regarding the hands-on workshop, their opinions of the effectiveness of Online Labs and general comments.
“This is my first experience to get connected with animated lab experiments. It is really good and very useful for teachers and students”. “Good if you develop similar kinds of software for language subjects,” remarked S. Shivakumar, one of the participants from RIMSE.

N, class 11, Govt Higher Secondary School, Kuniyamuthur, after attending the Online Labs workshop held at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetam, Ettimadai Campus on 11 January 2013.
The workshop was part of the second edition of the Amrita International Conference on ‘Women in Computing’ organized on the campus from January 9-11, 2013. Around 300 school children from 18 schools located in Coimbatore and Palakkad areas participated in the workshop and had a unique opportunity to experience Online Labs on a tablet.
The workshop was organized and managed by the staff of CREATE (Center for Research in Advanced Technologies for Education) and some student volunteers at Amrita University.
CREATE is an educational initiative pioneered by Amrita University, that focuses on providing effective, low-cost educational technologies to improve the quality of education in both school and higher education.
Online Labs is one of the research projects of Amrita CREATE in partnership with CDAC, Mumbai under a research grant from Department of IT, India. The lab provides online practical experiments in Physical and Chemical sciences for the school students with content aligned to the NCERT/CBSE curriculum.
Since the majority of students participated in the workshop came from rural Government and tribal schools, operating a tablet was a first time experience for most of them and they showed a keen interest on exploring the contents of Online Labs with the tablet. The students were highly enthusiastic as they went through the experiments such as ‘Laws of Reflection of Sound’ and ‘Determination of Density of Solid’ on their own for the first time using touch based technology.
The whole program educated the students from rural areas how to make use of touch technology and made them aware of the importance of accessing internet for educational purposes. At the end of the session, the students filled out a brief survey that captured their feedback regarding the hands on experience on a tablet, their opinions of the effectiveness of Online Labs and general comments.

The enthusiasm in the response received from the students clearly revealed the fact that a student understanding of a subject can be improved by simulated experiments and learning can be more of fun by using a touch screen simulation.
The Online Labs project runs a series of workshops on Online Labs in Physics, Chemistry, Biology. These workshops offer an introduction to the innovative world of Virtual Lab for physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics.
Online Labs are a new immersive e-learning tool that provides a media-rich, interactive user interface that teachers can use to supplement their curriculum. These Virtual Labs are located on an open webpage that can be accessed by anyone through a web browser, on any Internet-connected computer in the world. A variety of laboratory experiments can be conducted virtually using animations and simulations. Laboratory experiments are modelled very close to real-life experiments. When used as a learning tool by students OLabs allows them to learn the material more efficiently and can actually make doing the practical experiments easier.
The workshops offer a fantastic opportunity for all faculty members involved in the education of physics, chemistry and biology to learn more about the Online Labs. We showcases our online labs in physics, chemistry, biology and include a hands-on training session on how to use the Online Labs website. This is a one-day workshop with separate sessions in physics, chemistry and biology held in parallel on the same day.
This project is an educational initiative pioneered by Amrita CREATE, the Center for Research in Advanced Technologies for Education at Amrita University in partnership with CDAC, Mumbai; under a research grant from the Department of Information Technology, Government of India.
