Materials Required

The Procedure
Real Lab Procedure
Reaction with Aluminium metal
- Take a small piece of aluminium metal using a spatula then place it in a clean and dry test tube.
- Add about 5 mL sodium hydroxide solution which is measured in the measuring cylinder.
- Perform the smell test on the gas liberated by fanning the gas gently towards your nose. (Caution: Never smell chemical substance directly close to your nose)
- Bring moist blue and red litmus papers to the mouth of the test tube when gas is liberating.
- Perform combustion test by bringing a lighted candle near to the mouth of the test tube. (For this experiment the given below procedure should be done again because the Hydrogen gas get out quickly)
- Take some pieces of aluminium metal in a test tube. Add a few drops of NaOH into the test tube using a measuring cylinder.. Heat the test tube using the burner. Bring a lighted candle near the mouth of the test tube.
Reaction with dil. hydrochloric acid
- Take about 2mL dil. hydrochloric acid using a dropper and drop it in measuring cylinder.
- Similarly, take 5 mL of dil. sodium hydroxide solution in another test tube.
- Add dil. HCl (2ml) from measuring cylinder to dil. NaOH contained in test tube.
- Shake the mixture slowly .
- Take about 3mL dil. hydrochloric acid using a dropper and drop it in measuring cylinder.
- Keep on adding the dil. HCl(3ml) from measuring cylinder to dil. NaOH in test tube till the reaction mixture in test tube becomes neutral to litmus paper
- Touch the test tube and feel the temperature after complete addition of acid.

Precautions
- Always carry out the test for hydrogen with a very small volume of gas.
- Handle hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide solutions very carefully.
- Shake the solutions and reaction mixtures carefully without spilling.
- Care must be taken while performing the combustion test.
- Don’t touch on the hot surfaces.
