Materials Required:
A mixture of iron filings, sand and common salt, magnet (kept in a petri dish), Filter paper (On a paper box), Funnel, two beakers, Petri plate, glass rod, Burner, Tripod stand, wire gauze, a sheet of paper, Lighter, Spatula, Magnet piece, Water in a wash bottle
Procedure:
Real lab Procedure:
- Take a small amount of the given mixture of iron fillings, sand and common salt in a petri dish.
- Spread the mixture on a sheet of paper.
- Take a glass rod and using a glass rod spread the mixture.
- Move a magnet over the surface of the mixture.
- Fill a beaker with the residual mixture after the iron filling has been removed.
- Add a sufficient amount of water using a wash bottle to cover the mixture.
- Stir the contents of the beaker with a glass rod for some time.
- Place a tripod stand, keep the funnel in the tripod stand, fold the filter paper, and place it inside the funnel.
- Filter the content with the help of a funnel and filter paper
- Place a tripod stand on the top of the burner and then place a wire gauze. Place the filtrate containing beaker on the tripod
- Turn on the burner and ignite the burner using a lighter.
- Heat the filtrate obtained in step using a burner.
- Heat the content till water evaporates.
Simulator Procedure:
- Drag the petri dish containing a mixture of iron filings, sand and common salt into the paper.
- Drop the petri dish into the paper to spread the mixture.
- Drag and drop the magnet over the surface of the mixture.
- Drag the paper containing a mixture of sand and common salt into the beaker.
- Drop the mixture into the beaker.
- Drag the wash bottle containing water into the beaker.
- Drop the water into the beaker.
- Click on the glass rod to stir the mixture.
- Click on the ‘Next’ button.
- Drag and drop the funnel into the tripod stand.
- Drag and drop the filter paper into the funnel.
- Drag and drop the beaker containing sand and water into the funnel.
- Drag and drop the beaker containing water into the top of the wire gauze
- Click on the knob to turn on the burner.
- Click on the “HELP” button to get the required procedural steps.
Observations:
- Iron fillings stick to the magnet and are thus separated.
- Sand remained undissolved in water and is separated by filtration.
- On heating the filtrate, water is evaporated and a white coloured substance (common salt) is left at the bottom of the beaker.
- Compare the separated components with the mixture you left aside.
Conclusion:
- Magnetic substances like iron are separated by a magnet.
- Substances which are insoluble in water (such as sand) can be separated by filtration.
- Substances which are soluble in water (such as common salt) can be separated by evaporation.
